Fighting for Our Sins – A Reflection on Redemption and Deception
I wrote Fighting for Our Sins as a reckoning—a weary confrontation with the never-ending cycle of sin and salvation. It’s about the exhaustion that comes with constantly trying to do right in a world that rewards everything but righteousness. It’s not about faith in a traditional sense, though the weight of religion hangs over it. It’s about questioning, searching, and realizing that the fight never really ends.
At its core, the song wrestles with the idea that we’re always at war with ourselves. We’re taught to believe in forgiveness, but that doesn’t stop us from repeating the same mistakes. Society tells us there’s a path to redemption, but the road is covered in hypocrisy. Those who claim to lead—the ones who speak of justice, truth, and salvation—often stand for nothing when it truly matters. There’s a frustration in that, a sense that no matter how much we struggle to be good, the game is rigged.
It’s also about doubt—doubt in ourselves, in others, in the institutions that claim to offer salvation. We’re told to seek the truth, but how do we find it when deception is easier to sell? The more we search for clarity, the more we create doubt, both in our own convictions and in the world around us. It’s a vicious loop.
Then there’s the question of forgiveness—of whether we can ever truly absolve ourselves. The world keeps turning, and with it, new sins, new betrayals, new wounds. We ask for forgiveness, we grant it, but do we ever really let go? Or do we just carry the weight differently?
This song carries a subtle religious undercurrent, not because it preaches belief, but because it acknowledges the struggle of faith—whether in a higher power, in humanity, or in ourselves. It’s a confession, not in the church sense, but in the late-night, whiskey-soaked reflection of a man staring into the abyss, wondering if anyone is staring back.
For me, Fighting for Our Sins is less about finding answers and more about admitting that the battle is endless. And maybe that’s what makes us human.
Lyrics
TELL ME WHO YOU ARE
TELL ME I’M NOT THAT FAR
TELL ME IT’S NOT THAT HARD
WHEN I CAN’T FIND THE TRUTH
TELL ME WHAT YOU SEE
TELL ME OF MISERY
TELL ME HOW CAN IT BE
WHEN YOU STAND FOR NO ONE
FIGHTIN FOR OUR SINS, DOES IT EVER END
FORGIVEN TO BEGIN, A NEW ONE
IT’S ALL WE EVER DO, NEVER TELL THE TRUTH
THERE IS NO RULE, BROKEN
TELL ME WHAT’S OUR PLAN
TELL ME TO UNDERSTAND
TELL ME IT’S IN OUR HANDS
WHEN WE, CREATE DOUBT
BRIDGE
CAN WE FORGIVE US ALL THE THINGS WE’VE DONE
CAN’T WE LET GO OF ALL AND EVERYONE
